Y'all are bad at accents

So... I get that I was 'doing an accent' in my last video, and I get that it wasn't spot on- I really didn't prepare for it very much anyway so I really don't feel too bad about it. But why do 60% of commenters feel they have to comment specifically on that? Is that really the main focus of that video??

And the opinions are so varied, from 'that was spot on' to 'that was terrible'. The fact is, I don't care either way- I posted the video already. I'm probably not going to revive this character, and I can't think of any special reason I would have to use that accent elsewhere.

Meh, I don't know. I only got to sleep about 6 am, and then I woke up at 10.45 so I am tired and grouchy.

You did a great job, Bryony. Whoever posted negative comments about your accent in the vid didn't get the point of the vid at all. Don't pay attention to them.

I've just watched it and I love your choice of background music - THAT's spot-on. :D

It would be strange if you really did a perfect accent. It was good, and more than good enough to convey the impression of that charcter. Bayou food does involve a lot of deep frying. Fish & Chips! Yaeh, that's it.

Those who make positive comments are likely fascinated that a young Englishwoman can effortlessly do an American accent; especially a Southern one. A U.S., Southern accent, is about as close to being the antithesis of the so-called "King's English" as you can get--in an English speaking nation.

Those who make negative comments, or "you sounded like Alabama, not Mississippi/Louisiana", want to assert themselves as an expert in state-by-state accents, rather than appreciate the hilarity of it all.

Parenthetically, I've lived here my whole life, visited various parts of "the South" numerous times, and I couldn't decipher the accents between people from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas or Oklahoma, if my life depended on it.

Anyhow, even if there was a discernable difference in the accents, being English, and being slightly off, makes the caricature even that much funnier.

As I've said elsewhere, in my view, it really was pure money, especially the "windows cracked" comment.

P.S. Just watched it again, the "vanilla milkshake" v. baby formula is tied with the "windows cracked" comment for wicked hilarity.

Just ignore it! I think people have that thing about you where they love to hate you, try not to let it bother you. It seems like, even though you say you shouldn't have to, you're constantly justifying yourself and responding to "haters". Try not to let it bother you. Personally I think that was one of your best videos.

With regards to the above, not everyones going to like her - but clearly with 24,000 subs she must be doing something right... right?

Takes real guts and talent to just wing it like that so nuts to the negatives.

Tell it like it is... I don't know whether that's directed at me but yeh... if having loads of subscribers is doing something right, she is defo doing something right! I do think that a large number of those subscribers are simply there to slag her off which is a bit sad.

They do it because people with no talent get fustrated by people with talent to relieve this fustration they criticize.

There's a slight difference in accents between various parts of the south, which I'm sure a majority of people who don't live there (or hell, probably even some that do) don't realize or pay any attention to. So you definitely did a pretty good job of representing the average southern accent without straying too far in one particular direction.

Something I don't think some folks took into account though is that it's one thing to go for a particular accent, but another to try go for a particular person's accent. Britney's accent is not as pure as it may have once been, having been a big celebrity now for about 10 years and working/living amongst people who talk completely different. That has an influence, both consciously and otherwise. Nobody truly wants to sound like a hick. I should know!

So yeah, I think you did a good job of going for a Britney impersonation. It's not just in the accent, but in the general behavior and such too which makes it. Plus, you said it was just a quick thing you did for fun, so it came out surprisingly well all considered. I know I'm personally always surprised to hear how easy it is for you to switch accents.

I honestly have a hard time imagining how one would fake an average American accent (like you've done in some other videos), because I can't really pick out anything in particular for one to emulate. Doing British seems easier from my point of view, since one can take up more of a haughty tone I guess. Not really sure how to describe it.

Anyway, in short, most people are dumb, especially on the internet. As my dad might say, "they aint worth spittin' on". So I wouldn't worry about it. You're the one with over 13,000 views on that video alone, after all.

Frankly, I think you did a damn good Britney Spears accent and you should be proud. If you can imitate her singing you could easily take that show on the road. You also did great makeup/costume to the extent that it was very convincing. Before you even started with the "childrearing tips" I knew who you were taking on.

If I didn't know better I say you were a southern American girl.

You've got the 'American bimbo' thing totally down. That's a good thing...
