Comment fight!!!!!

So, before I turn the commenting system on so you have to log in to comment, how about we have a big comment fight about how guns are bad, that I think religion is inherently stupid and for gullible fools, and abortion. I want one. No, I want 2!

Noooo! Allow anonymous comments.

You know it makes sense ;)

Or should that be 'I can't be arsed to sign up to blogger'?

You're so greedy. Us men don't even get to have one abortion! Surely that's against discrimination laws?

Papers,

I guess there's just no appreciation for polemics. You have Youtube, other people have stuff, what about polemics?

So, yeah, just make sure than when you get your abortions, you do it in the United States and not Norway. I, for one, wouldn't want to see you get it done on the cheap and then get an infection or something. Also, since the anti-abortion people will likely be packing, at least wear a bullet proof vest if you're not going prepared. And, finally, I'm not a super-big God guy either, but until the secularists find a way to stop hurricanes and cure AIDS, I'm gonna leave this God option open for a little bit.

Guns are bad. I wouldn't mind a person having a rifle to hunt. I large rifle is a little hard to sneak into a school. Women should have the choice to have abortions. If some stupid woman would rather have several abortions instead of taking birth control then she has that choice. It is very important that she should be able to make that choice. And lastly, religion is for stupid people who think the world is flat, and that the dinosaurs never existed. Game on peoples...and don't forget your scriptures!! And yes, I hated George Bush before it was cool.

That's the second time you've told me to piss off! It's cool, I'll show myself out. Toodles!

Yeah, religion is stupid. I got freaked out by that shit the one time I went to some cult party with my 'friend' and they kept shoving all this drink and snack food on me, but they wouldnt eat it! Suspicious behavior much?

Bryony,

I do my best not to get drawn into idiotic arguments. I'm not a youngster anymore. I can't waste my energy pointlessly.

I do quite like arguing, so sometimes it takes considerable effort to restrain myself!

Guns are good in the hands of the right people. By the end of this century I predict religion will be classified as a mental illness of the weak of mind. Religion makes no sense and to beleive in it you must have a screw loose.

You jerk Jesus died for our sins - sure his old man had the power to restore life and did so after 3 days so it wasn't really much of a sacrifice but it's the gesture that counts. And he did spread the gospel while avoiding the authorities though evetually they did nail him. But I guess the real moral of the story is a hole heap of dinosuars died so I can drive my car instead of walking places.
Amen to the Dinosuars

There was one hilarious idea that Jesus really did exist, really did miracles, but he was a Wiccan which is how he did those miracles.

Most religion is based around the same things, so I think that all religions are part of one bigger religion and we're all just missing the bigger picture.

Maybe I'm wrong.

Don't turn off commentsss! google and blogger accounts are for tools!.. uh present company excluded, of course..

As for guns, I would say that the immediate sense of life's impermanence that you feel when you're around guns is very reasonable. It's the sense of safety and permanence you feel, when you're not around guns, that is the illusion.

I disagree with what you said before about guns being designed to kill people. Sometimes, they're used for executions, but I think that they're primarily used to incapacitate people. Lethal force is just the most efficient way to accomplish that.

ZackAttack said...

And I don't give religion that much thought. It's all a bunch of stories that have been completely, and admitedly re-written and changed from top to bottom over and over again. That's why people take the parts of religion they like, and then let part of their brain trick the other part into thinking they actually believe it.

Even the basic concept of monotheism doesn't spring out of people naturally. A quick look at world history shows that.

Anonymous said...

Guns are not bad, people using the guns are bad.

I can see why religion can be seen as something stupid and for gullible fools since it requires a leap of faith. But, sometimes that leap of faith provides hope and comfort to the gullible fools.

Abortion....With the junk they put into women's cosmetics these days it don't matter. Their cosmetics will make them infertile. (www.cosmeticdatabase.com)

I have a blogger account, but still prefer commenting anonymously because I know how vicious people can be--I'm not as bold. I'll still come and read your blog but won't be able to comment.

Never point a gun at anything you aren't prepared to kill without hesitation. For if it sees a gun aimed in its direction, it likely will try to kill you first. This is especially true of police, security, and military types. They, as a rule, are taught to shoot to kill. The paperwork is much simpler if the victim isn't there to disagree with your version of the story.

On the subject of religion, I agree with you, Bryony, although I am usually a bit less blunt about it. Still, even if one doesn't practice it, it's so prevalent that it's useful to have knowledge about religious practices.

As for abortion, modern society has forgotten that abortions originally became legal (depending on country) due to the greater horror of girls dying or being maimed by failed black market or self abortions. Abortion should be a choice. That said, all medical procedures, even done properly, carry a risk. I'd suggest actually being pregnant before deciding to have one. Or two.

Should you wish help getting pregnant, I think you would find no shortage of volunteers.

Religion stupid?
Wait a minute! We're talking here about a belief that a cosmic zombie, can make you live forever if you (symbolically) eat his flesh and (telepathically) tell him you accept him as your master, so that he can remove an evil force that is present in all humans because a girl made out of rib was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree!

Now, why wouldn't we believe and respect this???

i don't believe intelligence has anything to do with religion. i hate when people act like we're adults who still believe in Santa Claus. we are fully capable of separating science and our religious upbringings.

Bri,
We humans think that Civilization is Wonderful! But at best, it's only a Vaneer. People will always find ways to Hurt, Maim and/or Kill other people. It has been said that we are at our Most Creative in Conflict. Our History is Rife with War,Slaughter and Genocide.

Religion is certainly not perfect. Faith has often been used to justify all of the above. It seems that organized religion also allows people to connect; or to feel a connection with others, to act Charitably, to Believe in and show Mercy, Compassion & connect with that which is the Better Parts of our Nature.

I don't want to defend the Indefensable, just point out that, like Guns, Religion isn't in itself bad, it's what is done with it that makes it Good/Evil.

As for Abortion, this world is Overpopulated (partially due to the admonition to "go forth and Multiply") and headed for,yet another crisis that will decimate the population(s) Birth Control is far more accessable (& cheap) then ever before and Abortion is the Final Option. It is far too Invasive a procedure for casual use & one I hope will become less needed in favor of not becoming Pregnant i ht efirst place. That's my 2 cents...

Guns are not bad the people holding the guns are usually bad. Guns were designed by us humans to kill other people more quickly from a distance. Though when you holds a gun and points it at someone you should be prepared to die. Because a gun is not a toy but a weapon that will kill therefore you must be prepared to be killed as well.

I don't believe in God or a higher power. But if God exist he wouldn't care for us humans. Because we just use his name to justify our actions and encourage soldiers to kill. Though i don;t mind people that do believe in god.

Abortion well i don't really have an opinion about abortion so i will leave that up to the other people that are going to comment here.

First off, I would like to say I am English and live in England. The author of this site does a tremendous job of putting our attitudes, beliefs etc in to an American context and if I may I would like to try and add further to this.
On the subject of religion we are not the God Fearing, Christian nation that America is and I personally find it astounding that Bush says that he asked God for advice about Iraq. I am aetheist but am perfectly happy that other people are not. I might even be a bit jealous of your beliefs. Anyway, Believe what you want but please dont enforce it upon me. I believe I am fairly typically 'English' in this.

Secondly, abortion; Until a friend of yours is carrying a rapists child please dont lecture anyone else about how a woman has no right to end a pregnancy. Fair to say I am pro choice and I believe I am correct when I say we dont have pro-life activists outside abortion clinics in the UK.

Guns. UK has a near hysterical phobia of guns especially handguns and 99.9% of the population backed the complete ban on handguns. They believed that they would be safer and shootings would stop happening. The fact no expert agreed with this was irrelevant.
Have a guess what has really happened in the UK since the ban?

bruce, who commented before me, is my hero.

I don't live in England. I live in America, where we supposedly have free speech.

i dont know, the biggest problem with religion for me is that I don't believe in god at all, not even a little bit, but i dont go around telling everyone else to believe what i believe.

There's this big thing in America about The Golden Compass movie coming out. It's so disgusting, because all the religious people are like, "It's teaching atheist ideas!!!" And it's so stupid, because anyone that's ever read that book should understand that the message isn't putting down any religion. It's about freedom from oppression. Sure, the author is an athiest, but that isn't his point in the books AT ALL. His point is that we should all be free to think how and what we want, and that no one group of people should be able to determine those things.

I dont know, my whole thing is that if you're afraid for your kids to see a film, or read a book that has a different opinion than you, you don't have enough faith in what you believe. If I went and watched the Passion of the Christ tonight, I have huge confidence that I would NOT suddenly believe in everything it says. And to go even further with that, even if it DID change my mind, so what?

So what if a kid sees The Golden Compass and said, "Hey, you know, I think that what I stand for is kind of messed up", how is that a bad thing?

It all goes back to the parents though, because if their kid said that, they'd freak out. I dont think parents are open enough with their kids. They always say, "You can BE whatever you want when you grow up." but they dont say, "You can BELIEVE whatever you want."

they don't teach their kids to be open to all the options.
I'm not a religious person, but I know a lot about different religions.
My parents exposed me to all kinds of things and said, "If you choose to believe this, that's your choice."

I mean, I don't believe in what the bible says, but I appreciate it as a work of literature.

i dont think enough parents think that way, or let their children think that way which makes me sad.

it's all, "if it isn't what we think, it's evil"
it's so sad that film and music and literature (and people, for that matter) can't just be appreciated for what they are, which may be different, but not "evil" or bad.

:'(

it just makes me sad that people think like that.

Religion is a hold over to an earlier time when we did not have rational science to explain the nature of things.

Why religion is still with us talks to the human need for fellowship, human interaction and the survival need found in being part of a group.

Oh, sure... my first comment on the PLB (that's Paperlillies Blog... yeah, I'm coining that) and the subject has to be about guns, religion, and abortion. I say we abort the guns because my religion tells me so. That or we use guns to abort religion. Oh, oh, oh... how about we start a religion about guns, and abort anyone who disagrees?

Eh... what do I know. I'm inherently stupid and a gullible fool.

I want sugar cookies! Cause I'd hit that.

Uh... M'kay, bye.

I agree about 66.66666666666666666% with you.

1. Guns are bad
2. Religion is unnecessary
3. Abortion should only be used in cases of rape or some other involuntary pregnancy. Otherwise, it's just a way for people to get out of taking responsibility for their actions. If one has sex, one should really have to deal with the consequences. I don't really think the creation of life should be so easily thrown about. I agree that our population is out of control, but that can be solved with abstinence or safe-sex.
