Second Life

My friend (from real life!!) Andy sent me this email just now:

"i started playing second life yesterday. im sure what with your penchant
for all things net you probably know of it?? its SO gay. but im addicted to
being rude to complete strangers. also running into them while they are
having a conversation with other people and pushing them into the sea etc.
ahhh what fun.
do u have a character? we should meet this eve. i can show you my hideous
online persona"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Andy is not really Mr Second Life. I love that he plays this!! I played it once for about a day and didn't know what i was supposed to do so I stopped trying it. It was only because they kept going on about it on BoingBoing that I even tried it. THANKS BOINGBOING.

anyway, maybe I will try it again. Does anyone play it? I don't understand what one is supposed to even do- it's like when I first went on myspace. I was so confused and scared! (not really scared, but you know, bewildered)

I'm too afraid I'll become cruelly and hopelessly addicted to it. I have a big enough internet addiction as it is without second life finally killing off my first one.

lol same here, I'm still stuck on YouTube and Battlefield 2!

Haha myspace = bewildering. Now that's true! Oh and I have similar worries about internet addiction as you badalbert :).

I gave it a try too, but I really couldn't find anything fun about it. I think it is for people with no real life who want to still have a life in some form.

Although I never knew you could push people into the seas and whatnot. That sounds fun.

Where do you make a profile for this blog? I can't seem to find it...

Also, what happened to your video you posted a few days ago PL? I saw it like 20 mins after posted but couldn't watch it, processing probably, and then it was removed. I'm assuming you took it down?

well... you can chat and stuff... of course ;)

you can also - and this is why i love it so much - be creative as hell. i won't make a list now, just watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxVDVggLqsA and see for yourself. =)

I have an account and have been in Second Life for almost 3 years.

Its more or less a 3D myspace - and people design clothes in programs like photoshop and upload them and other people buy those things and such.

There is no goal, no levels. It's merely a social platform with monetary benefits.

You have to pay to have fun in 2nd Life...

Don't play it....

Youtube is way better than that.

But it's worth to pay 15$ a month to play "World of Warcraft"

:D

Second Life has the potential to be huge. A lot of corporations and schools are buying there own virtual land so they can give virtual online presentations to distance learners or people who can't make it to physical meetings.

We're actually looking into getting this setup where I work.

Ive been considering joining up with it for ages as well but like you have said, I do not enjoy trying to learn how to use new interfaces.

You might like Second Life as a creative outlet for your artwork and jewelry. You can set up a shop and sell your work for Linden dollars. Linden dollars can be exchanged for real money. You could also design virtual clothing and jewelry, that believe it or not, people will buy! You can also buy property and build a home on it. You can attend concerts and university lectures in SL.

I actually had to do a 10 minute pitch for a course I'm taking about Second Life. A lot of people have been actually using it for real life income. It's strange.. but there is no purpose to it. There is no tasks or anything for people to complete, so I don't see how it is surviving.

I prefer First Life

What Andy is doing is called griefing -- getting off on causing problems for others. Analogous to pushing people into the pool in RL or being a hater on Youtube. Sadly, some people enjoy being disruptive a lot more than being constructive.

Get a PS3 they are supposed to have something similar to Second Life called "Home" but doesn't cost a monthly fee. Although you will need to pay if you want to buy better housing, furniture or clothing. I'm not sure when "Home" is going to be released. I haven't seen it yet.

Hmmm... I downloaded it once on my own crappy computer, and it didn't work because I didn't have the right things on it (graphic card or sth).
I guess I could try it on the family Vista, but I almost never get the chance to be on that computer so I probably won't.

The only real online multiplayer game I ever played, was Travian. I was sooo addicted to it. I was on the Dutch servers though. It was fun ;)

I am new on MySpace. In holland we have the best myspace type website ever called hyves. No one goes onto myspace. But I figured I'd make one and I still feel bewildered haha!
And I have no friends except some YouTubers because, as I said, the dutch don't use MySpace.... Everyone has Hyves here. Even the Prime minister and politicians and famous dutch people.
Oh about MySpace, anyone who wants to add me feel free: DutchGirl107. I have a blog too that no one reads (yet). TheDutchGirl.blogspot.com. Hope you don't mind me promoting my stuff on here PL! If you do, just tell me haha!

I've been on SecondLife for almost a year. Contrary to popular belief most of the people i've met do have perfectly good lives. Some are married, some are students and some are just regular people who would rather spend their free time talking to others than stuck in front of the television. Sure there are some people who spend a rediculous amount of time on there but you get those kind of people on youtube or myspace. All in all i would reccomend SL, you don't need to put money into it, you don't need to have a house, you can get as much or as little involved as you wish and it is very much worth it :D

hey, I really find you interesting, and I love reading what people write, you know, specially when they live in another continent!
bye!

I had a second life character for about a month, I had a second life job for about 2 weeks in which I earned 200 Linden currency, and I couldn't figure out how to do much else besides just interact with other people and then I thought. Well, this is about like IMVU then. And I quit, eventually the emails from that job I had of people wondering where I am stopped coming, and I ended up getting a REAL life.

But it is very addictive and fun.

am I the only person that playing second life gave a massive splitting headache to?

Only lasted about 5 minutes before I got sick of it.

oh well :)

Alright, got my profile together! Now I see why this blog just blew up, you put it in your new video. I'm gonna miss being one of the under 20 people that posted...

I don't play 2nd life, but I do enjoy being rude to random people on the internets just to see how they react.. I've probably told you that you suck on youtube a few times; you take it quite well tho, so it's no fun.

Haha, glad to know I'm not the only one who's addicted to second life, especially someone as cool as you. ^_^

Yep, it does suck and can pretty much take over your life. =[
